Classification standards and testing methods of insulating conductive and antistatic PEEK

Pure PEEK is an insulator with outstanding high and low voltage resistance, and can maintain its electrical properties in a wide temperature and frequency range. However, in special industries such as electronic semiconductors, the accumulation of static electricity generated during the production process will attract dust in the slightest, causing breakdown and damage to electronic devices, and in severe cases, it will cause major accidents such as explosions and fires. This requires PEEK rollers, PEEK vacuum suction pens, etc. In addition to the advantages of high temperature resistance, wear resistance, and high strength, it also needs to have an antistatic function and a real conductive function. Pure PEEK can be filled with conductive auxiliary materials such as carbon fiber and graphite to form antistatic PEEK or even Conductive PEEK.

Classification criteria

One of the main methods of distinguishing insulators, antistatic materials and conductors is to detect their surface resistance. The classification standards are detailed in the table below:

Characteristic description
Surface resistance
Unit Test Methods
Insulation PEEK
It is an insulator, non-conductive, prone to static electricity and unable to discharge
1012 and above
Ω Surface resistance tester
Anti-static PEEK
Belongs to anti-static body, can discharge static electricity
106-1011
Ω Surface resistance tester
Conductive PEEK
Conductor, can conduct electricity
10³-105
Ω Surface resistance tester

Conductive PEEK

Remark:

1. The surface resistance value is referred to as surface resistance.

2. The concept of surface resistance: it refers to the ratio of the DC voltage between two points on the surface of the material to the passing current, unit: Ω (ohm).

Measurement methods, instruments and photos: There are two commonly used measurement methods for surface resistance

1. It can be measured with a surface resistance tester, see the figure below for details

Testing Conductive PEEK Rods Using Light-Up Surface Resistance Testers

Remarks: The surface resistance tester is designed according to EOS/ESD, CECC, ASTM and UL test procedures, and is used to measure the impedance or resistance of all conductive, antistatic and static discharge surfaces. There are two types of lighting type and heavy hammer type.
