What are the materials for optical lenses?

August 23, 2023

In our daily life, we often see a variety of lighting fixtures, some lamps and lanterns are the use of reflectors to achieve illumination distribution, such as common flashlights, and some are the use of lenses to achieve illumination distribution, such as LED street lamps, as well as some scenic lighting.

For optical lenses, generally divided into 4 categories.

The first category is silicone lens, silicone lens high temperature resistance performance, can withstand temperature of 300 degrees Celsius, high strength, drop resistance, light transmission rate of about 94%, but the molding size precision is slightly poor, not quite suitable for high precision requirements of light distribution of the lens, generally directly encapsulated in the LED chip.

The second category is PMMA lens, PMMA lens, also known as acrylic, can withstand a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius, heat distortion temperature of 90 degrees Celsius, so the temperature resistance is poor, more suitable for high-temperature injection molding, production efficiency is relatively high, 3mm thickness of PMMA lens transmittance at about 93%. But after molding is more brittle, not suitable for complex shapes.

The third category is the PC lens, PC lens professional name for polycarbonate, is a PC plastic, has a very strong toughness, impact resistance is better, can withstand high temperatures of 130 degrees Celsius, very suitable for high-temperature injection molding, so the production efficiency is relatively high, but the rate of leakage of light is slightly lower, only 88% or so.

The fourth category is the glass lens, the disadvantages of the glass lens is also more obvious, the cost is higher, more easily broken, so the glass lens is often used in the less active occasions, but the advantage is that the light transmittance is extremely high, can reach about 97%.
