The difference between NYLON and Polyimide

June 17, 2023

Nylon (Nylon), Chinese name polyamide, English name Polyamide (abbreviated as PA), is a general term for thermoplastic resins containing repeating amide groups -NHCO- on the main chain of the molecule. Its name is determined by the specific number of carbon atoms of the synthetic monomer. It was invented by Carothers, a chemist from DuPont and his scientific team.

Nylon series is the most important engineering plastic. It is widely used, covering almost every field, and is the most widely used variety among the five major engineering plastics.

Nylon sheet is divided into extrusion and casting according to different production processes.

Extruded nylon sheet

1.Nylon 6 (white): This material has the most superior overall performance, including mechanical strength, stiffness, toughness, mechanical shock absorption and wear resistance. These characteristics, coupled with good electrical insulation and chemical resistance, make Nylon 6 a "general-purpose" material, used in the manufacture of mechanical structural parts and maintainable parts.

2, nylon 66 (cream color): compared with nylon 6, its mechanical strength, stiffness, heat and wear resistance, better creep resistance, but the impact strength and mechanical shock absorption performance is reduced, very suitable for automatic lathe machining.

3, nylon 4.6 (red-brown): compared with ordinary nylon, nylon 4.6 is characterized by strong rigidity preservation, good creep resistance, in a wider temperature range, more heat-resistant aging, therefore, nylon 4.6 for nylon 6, nylon 66, POM and PET in the stiffness, creep resistance, heat-resistant aging, fatigue strength and wear resistance can not meet the requirements of the "higher High temperature field" (80 -150 ℃)

4, nylon 66 + GF30 (black): compared with pure nylon 66, this nylon filled with 30% glass fiber reinforced, its heat resistance, strength, stiffness. Creep resistance and dimensional stability, wear resistance and other properties have been improved, its maximum allowable use temperature is higher.

5, nylon 66 + MOS2 (gray-black): this nylon filled with molybdenum disulfide, compared with nylon 66, its rigidity, hardness and dimensional stability has improved, but the impact strength has decreased, the effect of molybdenum disulfide grain formation to improve the crystalline structure, so that the material load-bearing and wear resistance have been improved.

Casting nylon sheet

Also known as MC nylon: English name Monomer casting nylon, Chinese name monomer casting nylon. It has a wide range of applications, with "excellent performance by replacing steel with plastic". It has light weight, high strength, self-lubricating, wear-resistant, anti-corrosion, insulation and other unique properties. It is a widely used engineering plastic in almost all industrial fields.

The main types of cast nylon sheets commonly used in the market are as follows:

1: MC Nylon (Ivory): The properties of unmodified cast nylon 6 are extremely close to those of nylon 66, with good overall performance, high strength, stiffness and hardness, creep resistance, wear resistance, heat resistance to aging, good machinability, etc.

2: MC901 (blue): this modified nylon 6 has a striking blue color, higher toughness than ordinary cast nylon, good flexibility, fatigue resistance, proving to be the ideal material for gears, racks and transmission gears.

3: Pa6+ oil (green): This cast nylon 6 is a veritable self-lubricating nylon, developed specifically for the manufacture of parts that cannot be lubricated, have high loads and run at low speeds, greatly broadening the range of nylon applications, which has a lower coefficient of friction (up to 50% lower) and improved wear resistance (up to 10 times higher) than ordinary nylon.

4: PA6+ molybdenum disulfide (gray-black): containing molybdenum disulfide powder, it can improve the load-bearing capacity and wear resistance without affecting the impact and fatigue resistance of unmodified cast nylon, which is very widely used to manufacture gears, bearings, star wheels and sleeves.

5: PA6+ solid lubricant (gray): Using the patented formulation of cast nylon 6 with solid lubricant inside, the material has self-lubricating properties, excellent abrasion resistance, outstanding wear resistance and pressure speed capability (5 times higher than ordinary cast nylon). It is especially suitable for high speed running and unlubricated moving parts, and is a perfect complement to oil-containing nylon
