PEEK Material Machining Tools Guide-How to process large size, thin wall, high length PEEK shaft sleeves?

PEEK Polyetheretherketone material as a thermoplastic engineering plastics, PEEK (polyether ether ketone) is an aromatic crystalline thermoplastic special polymer material with high mechanical strength, high temperature resistance, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, hydrolysis resistance, wear resistance and other excellent physical and chemical properties.PEEK with its excellent overall performance is widely used in the aviation industry, machinery industry, electronics and electrical fields.

PEEK material characteristics:


-PEEK shapes are stronger and harder than most plastics, but softer than most metals, which means processing tools is critical.

-All PEEK-grade tools are more abrasive than softer plastics such as nylon and Acetal. This is especially true for grades reinforced with glass or carbon fiber. Carbide tools can be used for short strokes. Part geometry, tolerances and grades will also influence tool selection. Polycrystalline (PCD) tools should be considered for long travel, tight tolerance parts and reinforcement grades.

-PEEK has a lower elongation than many other plastics. Deep holes drilled into large sections without adequate coolant can lead to cracking, and coolant can be used when machining PEEK. Water-soluble and petroleum-based coolants can be used. Proper use of coolant will extend tool life and improve surface finish. Air, preferably from a cold air gun, can also be used for small parts, including those that are difficult to clean.


Large-size, thin-walled PEEK long bushings

In practical applications, PEEK is commonly used in the form of sealing rings, insulating rings, bushings, etc. Large, thin-walled, high length PEEK bushings are difficult to machine because they are prone to clamping deformation and tool vibration during processing.

1, PEEK pipe in the machining, if the size requirements are very high, try to PEEK pipe outer circle for double-sided grinding process, to ensure that no matter what clamping method can be used to better maintain the roundness of the PEEK tube.

2, PEEK pipe processing clamping method as far as possible using manual three-jaw chuck and spring collet for clamping, try to avoid the use of pneumatic hydraulic three-jaw chuck, (due to the three-jaw chuck force only three points, pneumatic and hydraulic control is easy to pipe out of round, the size is not guaranteed).

Spring collet can be wrapped around the PEEK tube as a whole (better with a rounded PEEK tube), more force points, to help maintain the stability of the processing size. Manual chuck clamping force can be controlled manually, also conducive to dimensional control.

Solution to the problem of vibrating tool

The actual machining example is a sleeve with an outer diameter of 137mm and an inner hole of 127mm and a length of 342mm. The inner hole tool is made of Φ60*400mm anti-vibration tool bar made of special steel. The excellent material performance can effectively control the chattering of the tool bar and better control the tolerance and finish of the inner hole of the product.

The front end of the outer circle of the product is supported by the middle bracket, and the adjustment support strength of the clip needs to be moderate, otherwise it will affect the roundness of the inner hole of the processed product or the displacement of the workpiece. The back end of the inner hole step is made at the cover support to avoid the three jaws affect the roundness of the product. Processing of the outer circle will be completed using a metal mandrel after hitting the table.
