Understanding The “Polysulfone” Family (PPSU, PSU, PES)

What are PSU, PPSU, and PES?
Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) and polyethersulfone (PES) have excellent properties typical of polysulfone (PSU). Compared to PSU, PPSU offers improved heat resistance, inherent flame retardancy, superior chemical resistance, and better mechanical properties, including excellent impact resistance. PES also has better thermal properties than PPSU, and its chemical resistance is intermediate between PSU and PPSU resins.

A slightly amber-colored linear polymer. Stable to general acids, bases, salts, alcohols, aliphatic hydrocarbons, etc. except for strong polar solvents, concentrated nitric acid and sulfuric acid. Partially soluble in ester ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, soluble in halogenated hydrocarbons. Good rigidity and toughness, temperature and heat oxidation resistance, excellent creep resistance, corrosion resistance to inorganic acids, alkalis, salt solutions, resistance to ionic radiation, non-toxic (does not contain bisphenol A), insulation and self-extinguishing, easy to molding and processing.
 
Polyphenylsulfone is an amorphous material with stronger impact toughness, chemical stability and hydrolysis resistance compared to PSU. Its continuous working temperature is about 180℃. After experiencing the temperature effect can still maintain a very high notched impact toughness. PSU long-term use temperature of 160 ℃, PPSU long-term use temperature of 180 ℃;
 
PPSU-related properties and uses
1, PPSU is suitable for the production of heat-resistant parts, insulation parts, wear parts, instrumentation parts and medical equipment parts.
 
2, PPSU in the electrical and electronic industry is commonly used in the manufacture of integrated circuit boards, coil tube frame, contactors, sets of frames, capacitor film, high-performance alkaline battery shell.
 
3, PPSU in household appliances used in microwave oven equipment, coffee heaters, moisturizers, hair dryers, cloth steamer, beverage and food distributor, dietary tableware, cups, bottles and so on. Can also be used instead of non-ferrous metals for clocks and watches, copiers, cameras and other precision structural parts.
 
4, PPSU has passed the U.S. pharmaceutical, food field specifications, can replace stainless steel products. Because PPSU is resistant to steam, hydrolysis, non-toxic, high temperature steam sterilization, high transparency, good dimensional stability, etc., it can be used as surgical tool trays, nebulizers, fluid controllers, cardiac valves, pacemakers, gas masks, dental trays and so on.
 
As PPSU is a safe material, it does not contain endocrine disrupting carcinogenic chemicals (environmental hormone: Bisphenol A), and as an excellent heat-resistant material, the heat-resistant temperature is up to 207 degrees. It can be repeatedly boiled at high temperature and sterilized by steam. It has excellent resistance to chemicals, acids and alkalis, and can withstand general cleaning of potions and detergents without chemical changes. Lightweight, drop-resistant, the best in terms of safety, temperature resistance, hydrolysis resistance and impact resistance.

Polysulfone is amber transparent solid material, high hardness and impact strength, heat and cold resistance, good aging resistance, can be used at 160 ℃ for a long time. Resistant to corrosion of inorganic acids and alkalis, but not resistant to aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons

6. Electronic and electrical appliances: can be used in the manufacture of television sets, audio and computer integral circuit boards, but also the production of electronic and electrical equipment shell, plating tanks, oscilloscope casing and coil frame, capacitor film and wire, cable coating layer, a variety of small precision electronic components. Polyarylsulfone can be used as ℃ level insulating material, made into a variety of high-temperature-resistant coil frames, switches, connectors, etc. Polyethersulfone can also be used as a coil frame. Polyethersulfone can also be used as coil tubing, coil frames, miniature capacitors and so on. 7. Transportation: used in the manufacture of automobiles on the dashboard, speed splitter cover, guard plate, ball bearing cages, engine gears, thrust rings, etc.; aircraft hot air ducts and frame windows.
 
8. Medical devices: because of its transparency and heat resistance to water, steam, ethanol and sanitary characteristics, can be used to make gas masks, contact with the eye nitrile tablets of the sterilizer, endoscopic parts, artificial heart valves, artificial dentures, etc.; polyethersulfone can be made into an artificial respirator, blood pressure check tubes, dental reflective mirror bracket, syringes and so on. Polysulfone and polyethersulfone can also be made into more than filter membranes and reverse osmosis membranes.

First, the material properties of PES

PES and polybutylene succinate (PBS) are homologous, easily decomposed and metabolized by a variety of microorganisms in nature or by enzymes in plants and animals, and eventually generate carbon dioxide and water. It is often used as a substitute or filler for PBS, which not only saves costs but also improves certain properties of the material to achieve unanticipated effects while maintaining the same product performance. Based on the biodegradability of PES, it has great prospects for development in plastic film, food packaging, biological materials and so on.
 
Application of PES
1, Heat resistance, heat transformation temperature of 200 ~ 220 ℃ continuous use temperature of 180 ~ 200 ℃, UL temperature index of 180 degrees Celsius
 
2, Hydrolysis resistance, can be resistant to 150 ~ 160 ℃ hot water or steam, in the high temperature is not subject to acid and alkali erosion.
 
3, The modulus of the temperature dependence of its modulus in -100 ℃ to 200 ℃ almost unchanged, especially in the 100 ℃ than any kind of thermoplastic resins are good
 
4, Creep resistance, in the temperature range of 180 ℃ below its resistance to change is an excellent thermoplastic resin, especially glass fiber reinforced PES resin is better than some thermosetting resin.
 
5, Dimensional stability, the coefficient of linear expansion is small, and its temperature dependence is also small is its characteristics, characterized by 30% glass fiber reinforced PES resin, its coefficient of linear expansion is only 2.3x10-5 / ℃, and up to 200 ℃ is still able to maintain a similar value with aluminum.
 
6, Impact resistance, with the same impact resistance as the polycarbonate cool, not reinforced resin can be riveted, but more sensitive to the sharp and thin incision, so in the design must pay attention to!
