Is nylon or POM better for making plastic gears?
 
Plastic gears are the most widely used mechanical transmission components in modern machinery. Gear transmission transmits motion and power between two axes in space through the meshing of the gear teeth, which can change the mode and speed of motion.
 
In the planning and manufacturing process of plastic gears, it is necessary to consider the function of the raw material to adapt to the working conditions of the parts and make them durable, and the raw material should have a better processing function and economy to improve the productivity of the parts, reduce costs and reduce consumption. If the raw materials of plastic gears are not properly selected, the parts will be prematurely damaged or even fail. Therefore, how to rationally select and use raw materials is a very important task.

Satisfactory mechanical properties of raw materials include strength, hardness, plasticity and tolerance. Reflect the characteristics of raw materials in the application process. When plastic gears mesh, there are contact stresses on the tooth flanks and Z-bending stresses on the tooth roots, which may lead to strength failure of the tooth flanks or the tooth body. Relative sliding at various points on the tooth surface can cause wear. The main forms of failure of plastic gears are tooth pitting, tooth gluing, tooth plastic deformation and tooth fracture. Therefore, the gear data is required to have high bending fatigue strength and contact fatigue strength, the tooth surface should have satisfactory hardness and wear resistance, the core should have a certain strength and tolerance.
 
Metal gears run well and have good dimensional stability when temperature and humidity change. However, compared with metal data, plastic gears have many advantages in cost, planning, processing and function. The planning freedom inherent in plastic gear molding ensures more efficient plastic gear manufacturing than metal molding. It is possible to mold internal gears, gear sets, worm gears, and other products from plastic that are difficult to mold at a reasonable price from metal materials. Plastic gears are used in a wider range of applications than metal gears, so they are pushed to carry higher loads and transmit more power. Plastic gears are also important data to meet the requirements of low-noise operation, which requires the data to be presented with high precision, new tooth shape, and smoothness or flexibility.
 
Plastic gears made of rubber in general do not require secondary processing, so the cost is 50% to 90% lower than stamped parts and machined metal gears. Plastic gears are lighter than metal gears, lethargic, and can be used in environments where metal gears tend to corrode and degrade, such as water meters and chemical equipment controls. Compared to metal gears, plastic gears can deflect deformations to absorb shock loads, and can better disperse partial load changes caused by shaft deflections and misaligned teeth. Plastic's many inherently smooth properties make it an ideal gear material for printers, toys, and other low-load transportation mechanisms, with the exception of lubricants. In addition to operating in a dry environment, plastic gears can be lubricated with grease or oil.

POM and nylon are two common materials for plastic gears, and many friends are always suspicious when choosing plastic raw materials. Should we use nylon as the material? Or POM?Which is the right choice to achieve the maximum cost-effective?
 
Nylon and POM big competition
 
Nylon has excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, especially impact resistance, abrasion resistance, resistance and temperature resistance, is much talked about.
 
1) Excellent mechanical function. Nylon has high mechanical strength and good resistance. 
 
2) Good self-lubrication and conflict resistance. Nylon has good self-lubrication, low coefficient of friction, and long service life as a transmission part.
 
3) Excellent heat resistance. Such as nylon 46 and other high crystalline nylon, high heat distortion temperature, can be used for a long time at 150 ℃. Nylon reinforced by glass fiber, its heat distortion temperature reaches more than 250 ℃. 
 
4) Excellent electrical insulation function. With high volume resistance and breakdown voltage, nylon is an excellent electrical and electrical insulation material.  
 
5) Excellent weather resistance.  
 
6) Water absorption. Nylon has a high water absorption rate, saturated with water up to 3% or more, which affects the dimensional stability of the parts to some extent.

How to choose POM or Nylon as gears?
 
1.Wear resistance: when your product does not have many requirements, only wear resistance characteristics, choose POM is cost-effective, because POM wear resistance is better than nylon, the price is cheaper.
 
2.Wear resistance and temperature resistance: when your product needs wear resistance and temperature requirements, you should choose nylon, because POM's temperature resistance is very poor, can not meet your requirements.
 
3.Impact resistance, and water touch: when your product may be moved often, require impact resistance, and water contact, such as the tank cover on the car, this time you have to choose nylon, because POM is not hydrolysis resistant, although its impact resistance is very good.
 
4.Hardness and abrasion resistance: when your requirements are good hardness, low price, no requirements for temperature, choose POM.
 
5.Rresistance and rigidity: for resistance and rigidity are required information, nylon is more appropriate.
 
6.Load: medium and low load, pick POM.
