How big is the big family of nylon, the most popular of the five engineering plastics?
 
Nylon material is one of the top five engineering plastics, in the high-end engineering plastics materials its attention is very high. Nylon is actually a big family, there are many family members, each with their own characteristics and skills.

Let's start with the nomenclature of nylon.
 
There are three ways of naming nylon.
The first one, if it is made by the ring-opening polymerization of lactam, it is called nylon n, written as PAn, for example, Pa6, which is obtained by the ring-opening polymerization of caprolactam.
 
The second, if the polymerization of dibasic acid and dibasic amine, it is called nylon mn, where m indicates the number of carbon atoms in the dibasic amine that constitute the main chain part, and n indicates the number of carbon atoms in the dibasic acid that constitute the main chain part. PA610 is a polymerization of sebacic acid and adipic diamine.
 
The third type is expressed by repeating the abbreviation of diamine or diacid. Like isophthalic acid is abbreviated as MXDA, then the polymer of it and adipic acid is called nylon MXD6.

Here's how to recognize the members of the nylon family one by one. 
 
PA6, the big name is polycaprolactam. It appears to be a translucent or opaque milky white resin. Its mechanical properties are particularly good, stiffness, toughness, abrasion resistance are great, and mechanical shock absorption ability, insulation and chemical resistance is also good. In auto parts, electronic and electrical parts and many other places can see its figure. For example, automobile wind protection ring, it is often used to make PA6. 
 
Pa66, full name polyhexanediylhexanediamine. Compared with PA6, its mechanical strength, stiffness, heat resistance and wear resistance is stronger, creep resistance is also better, but the impact strength and mechanical shock absorption performance is slightly worse. It is widely used in automobiles, drones, electrical and electronic applications, like the car air intake system will use it. 
 
PA1010, which is also known as polyacetylenediamine. It is made of castor oil as the basic raw material, is our country Shanghai celluloid factory took the lead in the successful development and industrialized production.
Its biggest feature is that it can be stretched very long, very good ductility, can be stretched to the original length of 3 to 4 times, and high tensile strength, impact and low-temperature performance are very good, in minus 60 ℃ will not become brittle. At the same time, it has excellent abrasion resistance, toughness and oil resistance, and plays an important role in aerospace, cables, fiber optic cables, and surface coating of metals or cables. 
 
PA610, also known as polyarylhexylenediamine. It is semi-transparent milky white, strength between PA6 and PA66, relatively small specific gravity, low crystallinity, not easy to absorb water, good dimensional stability, abrasion resistance, but also can extinguish itself. Commonly used in precision plastic parts, oil pipelines, containers, ropes, conveyor belts, bearings, textile machinery parts, as well as electrical and electronic insulating materials and instrument shells. 
 
PA612, is polydodecanoylhexylenediamine. It is a very tough nylon with less density than PA610, extremely low water absorption, excellent abrasion resistance, small molding shrinkage, great hydrolysis resistance and dimensional stability. It is often used in monofilament and cable wrapping for high-grade toothbrushes. 
 
PA11, the name is polyacylenic lactam. It is white and semi-transparent, with a low melting temperature, wide processing temperature range, low water absorption, good low-temperature performance, and good flexibility between -40℃ and 120℃. Mainly used in automotive fuel lines, brake system hoses, fiber optic cable wrapping, packaging film, daily necessities. 
 
PA12, the full name of poly dodecanamide. It is similar to PA11, but with lower density, melting point and water absorption than PA11. Because it contains more tougheners, it has the properties of a combination of polyamide and polyolefin. It has a high decomposition temperature, low water absorption, and excellent low-temperature resistance, and is used in automotive fuel lines, instrument panels, gas pedals, brake hoses, muffler parts for electronics and appliances, and cable sheathing. 
 
PA46, also known as polyhexanediyl butylenediamine. It is characterized by high crystallinity, high temperature resistance, high rigidity, high strength, in the automobile engine and peripheral parts, like cylinder head, cylinder base, oil seal cover, transmission, and the electrical industry, contactors, sockets, coil skeleton, switches and other heat resistance, fatigue strength requirements are very high can come in handy. 
 
PA6T, called poly(terephthaloylhexylenediamine). It is high temperature, melting point of 370 ℃, glass transition temperature of 180 ℃, can be used for a long time at 200 ℃, high strength, dimensional stability, welding performance is also good, especially suitable for adhesive technology (SMT) with electronic connectors, in the automotive parts, oil pump cover, air filters, heat-resistant electrical components such as wire harness terminal boards, fuses, etc. are more applications. 
 
PA9T, poly(terephthaloyl nonylenediamine). It is small water absorption, water absorption rate of only 0.17%, heat resistance is also good, melting point of 308 ℃, glass transition temperature of 126 ℃, welding temperature of up to 290 ℃, in the electronics, electrical appliances, information equipment and automotive parts are widely used. 
 
PA10T, is poly(terephthaloyl decanediamine). It has very low moisture absorption, high temperature resistance, excellent toughness, rigidity and dimensional stability, good flow and processing properties, easy to color, high welding fusion line strength, melting point between 300 - 316°C, and a density of 1.42g/cm³. It is suitable for rapid prototyping and is widely used in LED reflective brackets, motor end caps, brush holders, gears, and more.

Transparent nylon, the chemical name is poly(terephthaloyltrimethylhexylenediamine). It is a semi-aromatic nylon. Its transmission rate of visible light can reach 85% - 90%. It is through the addition of special components in the composition of nylon, inhibit the crystallization of nylon, so as to form a non-crystalline and difficult to crystallize the structure, not only to maintain the toughness of nylon, but also to make transparent thick-walled products. Its mechanical properties, electrical properties, mechanical strength and rigidity is similar to PC and polysulfone. 
 
PA1414, the big name of poly(terephthaloyl terephthalamide). Its molecules are mainly composed of rigid benzene rings, is a highly rigid polymer, the molecular structure is symmetrical and regular, strong hydrogen bonding between the macromolecular chain, so it has high strength, high modulus, high temperature resistance, low density, small thermal contraction, good dimensional stability, etc., can be used to make high-strength, high-modulus fibers.
 
PA1313 (Aramid 1313), polycondensed from m-toluene dicarbonyl chloride and m-phenylenediamine. Its mechanical properties and heat resistance is much higher than aliphatic PA, as a fiber fabric, life is 8 times that of aliphatic PA fiber cloth, 20 times that of cotton, heat aging resistance is also very good, at 250 ℃ after 2,000h of heat aging, the surface resistivity and volume resistance are unchanged, at higher temperatures or humid environments, the electrical properties are still excellent, mainly used for H-class electrical Insulation Materials and the preparation of high-performance fibers ( HT-1 fiber). 
 
PA56, polycondensed from glutamine and adipic acid, glutamine can be extracted from natural organisms. It is environmentally friendly and is superior to some products of nylon 6, nylon 66 and polyester in terms of water absorption, glass transition temperature, strength, softness, moisture absorption and resilience.
 
PA1212, is obtained by polycondensation of dodecylenediamine and dodecanedioic acid. It has the lowest water absorption in the nylon family, good dimensional stability, oil resistance, alkali resistance, good abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, good transparency, and very good toughness at low temperatures, and is widely used in aerospace, automotive, textile, instrumentation, medical equipment and other fields.
