Applications

• Flywheels:Thrust washers made from PEEK high-performance polymers perform two different functions in dual-mass flywheels. Used as a vibration damper between the engine and transmission, the washer separates two objects vibrating against each other and seals the system from its surroundings. In order for the system to be precisely matched, the coefficient of friction has to be constant throughout the over-life time at 120°C. The vibration motion is also critical for the anti-friction system. Similarly, vibratory motion places high demands on the frictional properties of this anti-friction modified PEEK polymer.

• Planetary Gears: PEEK polymers have been used for decades as thrust washers for planetary gears in automatic transmissions in buses. In this application, the ability to withstand up to 1,800Nm of torque during stop-start operation is more critical than high speeds throughout a service life of more than 500,000km. Anti-friction modified PEEK polymers play an important role with their low wear rates and good oil resistance, in addition to good emergency running properties.

• Continuously variable automatic transmissions:In addition to their use in flywheels, thrust washers are emerging for a variety of new applications, including continuously variable transmissions (CVTs), dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs), and multi-step automatics.
